Mencari Referensi Berkualitas

Bagian penting dalam proses penelitian, selain menemukan masalah, adalah mencari referensi. Mencari referensi merupakan kegiatan yang tidak dapat terpisahkan dari topik atau masalah yang telah diputuskan untuk diteliti atau dipecahkan. Referensi dikatakan berkualitas jika memenuhi 4 (empat) prinsip, yaitu (1) current (mutakhir), (2) relevan (sesuai), (3) balance (seimbang), dan (4) primer (referensi jurnal).

Bagian yang akan dibahas dalam tulisan ini adalah prinsip nomor 4, yaitu referensi primer, atau referensi yang berasal dari jurnal ilmiah. Mengapa jurnal ilmiah? Jurnal ilmiah, terutama yang berstatus internasional bereputasi, memiliki standar tinggi dalam setiap penerbitannya. Topik, metodologi, serta kebaruan tulisan yang dinyatakan layak terbit, telah melalui proses penyuntingan yang ketat, sehingga menjamin kualitas tulisan tersebut. Artikel ilmiah juga dipastikan merupakan hasil penelitian yang dilaksanakan sesuai prosedur penelitian, sehingga menjamin isi artikelnya merupakan hal baru di bidang ilmu tertentu.

Artikel yang dimuat dalam jurnal internasional bereputasi tentunya sangat berharga, dan menjadi kebanggaan bagi penulisnya. Hal ini karena sulitnya sebuah tulisan dimuat dalam jurnal tersebut. Ditambah reward dalam bentuk penghargaan dan pengakuan dari masyarakat akademik yang sangat besar bagi siapapun yang berhasil memasukkan tulisannya dalam jurnal tersebut. Tulisan-tulisan inilah yang SANGAT BAIK jika dimanfaatkan sebagai referensi utama dalam setiap kegiatan penelitian akademik.

Akan tetapi, artikel-artikel yang diterbitkan dalam jurnal-jurnal internasional bereputasi tidak tersedia bebas di dunia maya. Peneliti yang ingin mengambil artikel tersebut harus berlangganan jurnal atau membeli artikel tersebut dengan harga yang tidak murah. Rata-rata harga per artikel yang dimuat dalam jurnal internasional bereputasi adalah US$ 40. Hal ini jelas agak menyulitkan bagi rekan-rekan peneliti di Indonesia, terutama bagi mahasiswa.

Untuk itulah, saya mencoba mencari beberapa sumber jurnal internasional bereputasi, dan memanfaatkan waktu promosi mereka, sehingga saya mendapat kesempatan beberapa hari untuk mendownload artikel-artikel dari beberapa jurnal internasional bereputasi tersebut. Mudah-mudahan saya tidak mendapat masalah karena menyebarluaskan artikel-artikel ini, karena saya pikir penting untuk dibagikan, agar kita mendapatkan bacaan dan referensi berkualitas untuk meningkatkan kualitas pendidikan di Indonesia.

Collaborative Research - Penelitian Kolaboratif

Merupakan inti dari dibangunnya blog ini. Artinya, blog ini diharapkan dapat menjadi wadah informasi dan referensi bagi rekan-rekan peneliti, khususnya di dunia pendidikan.

Pendahuluan
Kali ini, akan dibahas mengenai sebuah strategi penelitian yang dapat digunakan oleh peneliti di bidang pendidikan agar dapat menghasilkan karya-karya penelitian yang bermanfaat bagi dunia pendidikan di Indonesia. Mengapa dikatakan strategi? Karena collaborative research pada dasarnya hanya cara-cara atau langkah-langkah praktis terukur yang dapat dilakukan untuk mempercepat pelaksanaan penelitian, sekaligus meningkatkan kualitas karya yang dihasilkan.

Mengapa perlu melakukan penelitian? Mengapa guru-guru (perlu) diharuskan melakukan penelitian?

Guru lebih jauh diharapkan kompeten dalam hal penelitian, yang bertujuan menghasilkan inovasi-inovasi dalam pembelajaran. Akan tetapi, faktanya juga guru belum memiliki kompetensi yang cukup dalam hal melaksanakan penelitian. Fakta ini terlihat dari hasil studi pendahuluan yang peneliti lakukan sebelumnya, yaitu hampir 70 persen guru yang disurvei belum memiliki pengetahuan yang benar mengenai konsep masalah dan penelitian. Bahkan, hampir 90 persen guru tidak pernah melakukan kegiatan penelitian dan akhirnya mengakibatkan hampir 100 persen guru tidak pernah melakukan publikasi mengenai hasil penelitian. 

Lemahnya kompetensi guru dalam melaksanakan penelitian secara umum juga disebabkan karena minimnya jaringan dan kerjasama yang dimiliki oleh guru. Jaringan dan kerjasama inilah yang sebenarnya dapat membantu guru dalam melaksanakan penelitian secara kolaboratif. Penelitian yang dilaksanakan secara kolaboratif akan menghasilkan penelitian yang lebih mudah, lebih cepat, bahkan dapat dikatakan hasilnya lebih baik dibandingkan penelitian individu. Zaman dulu, penelitian secara kolaboratif memang sulit untuk dilakukan, karena keterbatasan ruang dan waktu (Allen, 1977; Kiesler & Cummings, 2002; Kraut et al. 1990). Akan tetapi, dewasa ini pertukaran informasi, baik dalam bentuk data, instrumen, dan lain sebagainya sudah sangat mudah karena bantuan teknologi. Untuk itu, tidak ada alasan yang menghambat pelaksanaan penelitian secara kolaboratif, karena yang dibutuhkan hanya keinginan dan kesadaran untuk melakukan penelitian sebagai bentuk pengembangan diri.

Pentingnya kegiatan penelitian bagi para guru diungkapkan oleh Hammersley, yang menyatakan, “educational research should be an integral part of the work of teachers in schools rather than an activity carried out on schools by outsiders”. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa penelitian sebenarnya merupakan bagian yang tidak terpisahkan dari pekerjaan seorang guru. Artinya, dengan melakukan penelitian, seorang guru dapat terus meningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran di kelasnya dari waktu ke waktu. Lebih jauh Cheruvu menyatakan, “Yet teacher research—systematic data collection and analysis of a problem of practice—is helpful for improving one’s practice, gaining a deeper understanding of students’ perspectives and needs, and, ultimately, improving students’ learning.” Dari pemahaman ini terlihat bahwa penelitian akan menghasilkan pembelajaran bermakna yang akhirnya akan meningkatkan kualitas hasil belajar peserta didik.

Lalu, apa itu collaborative research?

Collaborative Research
Riset secara kolaborasi masih terdengar asing dalam dunia pendidikan di Indonesia. Hal ini terlihat dari minimnya hasil-hasil penelitian yang didasarkan pada penelitian secara kolaboratif. Lieberman mengatakan Collaborative research can indeed be accomplished in a variety of contexts. Pendapat tersebut menegaskan bahwa penelitian kolaboratif dapat dilakukan dalam berbagai konteks. Bahkan, penelitian kolaboratif dapat dilakukan oleh para guru, khususnya beberapa guru yang memiliki pemahaman bahwa penelitian adalah kegiatan yang penting dilakukan untuk meningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran. Collaboration offers not only the potential breakdown of historical divisions between universities and public schools, but also offers future teachers useful models for participation in educational research.

Collaboration amongst teachers can help build and strengthen solidarity. Dengan berkolaborasi, memungkinkan guru saling berinteraksi dengan dunia luar, terutama dengan masyarakat atau dengan peneliti dari perguruan tinggi. Hal ini secara langsung atau tidak langsung akan memperkuat solidaritas di kalangan peneliti itu sendiri. Sebaliknya, tanpa kolaborasi, akan sulit mendapatkan pengembangan-pengembangan pembelajaran, karena masing-masing (baik guru atau peneliti di perguruan tinggi, atau juga masyarakat tidak berinteraksi untuk mendapatkan masukan. Without collaboration, academic researchers run the risk of developing ideas only through their data, while practitioners risk developing ideas only through interactions with students (Fox, 2003). Through collaborative work and dialogue, practitioners and researchers can build more robust educational theories and practices.

Mengapa penelitian dapat meningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran? National Research Council (NRC) menuliskan 6 (enam) prinsip dari penelitian ilmiah dan merekomendasikan bahwa para peneliti pendidikan harus: 1) pose significant questions that can be investigated empirically; 2) link research to relevant theory; 3) use methods that permit direct investigation of the questions; 4) provide a coherent and explicit chain of reasoning; 5) replicate and generalise across studies; and 6) disclose research to encourage professional scrutiny and critique. Prinsip-prinsip ini yang menjamin bahwa dengan melaksanakan penelitian, peneliti mulai dari masalah yang terjadi dalam pembelajaran, lalu memulai mencari teori, mengembangkan metode untuk memecahkan masalah, dan akhirnya mendapatkan solusi yang bertujuan memperbaiki proses pembelajaran.

(Kunhlein, 2008) mengatakan Collaborative (or participatory) research can be defined as researchers working together to achieve the common goal of producing new scientific knowledge. Penelitian kolaboratif dipandang sebagai kegiatan peneliti yang bekerja bersama untuk mencapai tujuan umum yaitu mengembangkan pengetahuan ilmiah. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa penelitian kolaboratif sangat penting dilakukan sebagai sarana untuk membangkitkan semangat mencipta, mensintesa, serta berkarya untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan ilmiah, baik di kalangan peneliti sendiri, maupun di lingkup masyarakat umum. Collaborative teacher research provides a way for teachers to participate in examination of classrooms and schools in order to shape policies, as well as bridge the divide between teachers, academics, and statehouses (Rust & Meyers, 2003).

Authentic collaborative research is conception, investigation, and nurturance of ideas through a naturalness of interaction that underlies any concurrent attention to power disparities resulting from the researchers’ particular social locations. Penelitian berkualitas sebenarnya tidak dapat dilakukan secara individu, karena wawasan dan cara pandangnya akan terbatas pada lingkup ilmu yang dipahami oleh seseorang itu saja. Untuk itulah perlu kolaborasi dalam penelitian, terutama dari disiplin ilmu lain. Hal ini bertujuan untuk mendapatkan wawasan yang lebih komprehensif terhadap suatu masalah, sehingga dapat diusulkan solusi yang terbaik. Research collaboration can take on many forms: teacher and teacher (Keffer, Wood, Carr, Mattison, & Lanier, 1998; Mohr, Rogers, Nocera, MacLean, & Clawson, 2004; Ritchie & Wilson, 2000); academic and teacher (Allen & Shockley, 1998; Kapunscinski, 1997; Rust & Meyers, 2003; Wells, 2001); whole school practitioner teams (Clayton Research Review Team, 2001; Senese, 2001); and community practitioner collaboration (Cochran-Smith & Lytle, 2009).

Borko et al (Borko & Whitcomb, 2008) the importance of research that “draws from multiple disciplines, is pluralistic in its methods, and is rigorously conducted and reported” (Borko et al., 2007). Kata kunci dari sebuah penelitian adalah harus dapat diklarifikasi metode penelitiannya, serta harus lengkap dan teliti dalam penulisan laporannya. Kelengkapan dalam metode penelitian dan ketelitian dalam penulisan laporan, akan memudahkan peneliti lain untuk melakukan verifikasi dan atau melakukan penelitian lanjutan terhadap tema penelitian yang sudah diteliti sebelumnya.

Gutierrez & Penuel (2014) the formulation of collaborative research standards that must require researchers to provide evidence that they have engaged in a process to surface and negotiate the focus of their joint work, and to document the ways participation in this process was structured to include district and school leaders, teachers, parents, community stakeholders, and, wherever possible, children and youth. Penelitian kolaboratif mengharuskan peneliti untuk menyediakan bukti-bukti yang mereka dapatkan dalam proses penelitian. Untuk kegiatan penelitian kolaboratif yang dilaksanakan dalam lingkup pendidikan, maka peneliti harus mendapatkan data dari pimpinan sekolah, guru-guru, orang tua, komunitas stakeholder sekolah, dan tentu saja peserta didik itu sendiri. Hal ini dilakukan untuk mendapatkan data yang lebih lengkap dan detail, serta dari sumber yang jelas.

Penelitian kolaboratif seperti telah diuraikan sebelumnya adalah penelitian yang dikerjakan bersama-sama untuk memecahkan suatu masalah. Untuk itu, partisipasi aktif dari para peneliti yang terlibat di dalamnya sangat penting untuk memastikan kualitas hasil penelitiannya. Frumkin (Chen, Wang, and Chen, 2014) indicated that if users can leave comments or annotations, this practice would open the door for sharing research experiences, facilitate collaborative research, and make it easy for future researchers to find materials they need in a particular collection. Pendapat Frumkin ini menegaskan bahwa masing-masing peneliti atau yang berkepentingan harus memberikan masukan, sehingga membuka ruang untuk diskusi, meningkatkan pengalaman penelitian, dan juga memfasilitasi pelaksanaan penelitian kolaboratif yang lebih luas. Akhirnya, peneliti selanjutnya akan mudah untuk mendapatkan akses dan materi-materi yang dibutuhkan, karena berhubungan dengan temuan penelitian sebelumnya.

Smith & Malina mengatakan ada 5 fase dalam penelitian kolaboratif lintas kultural, yaitu: 1) Phase 1: Harnessing Networks, 2) Phase 2: Focusing the Project, 3) Phase 3: Accessing Data, 4) Phase 4: Interpretation, and 5) Phase 5: Writing and Dissemination. Dari uraian tersebut, maka dapat dikatakan bahwa penelitian kolaboratif membutuhkan sistematika standar yang harus dipahami dan dilaksanakan oleh peneliti. Secara umum, uraian kegiatan yang harus dilakukan masih sama seperti sistematika penelitian pada umumnya. Akan tetapi, hal utama dan paling pertama dalam penelitian kolaboratif adalah membangun jaringan. Mengingat kegiatan penelitian kolaboratif melibatkan disiplin ilmu yang berbeda dan akan lebih baik juga lintas institusi, maka jaringan yang sudah terkoordinasi dengan baik, akan membuat kegiatan penelitian menjadi lebih lancar dan tentu saja dapat meningkatkan kualitas penelitian itu sendiri.

Borko & Whitcomb (2008) the field of teacher education research build its capacity for collaborative research, conducted by teams of researchers with expertise in multiple research methods, in order to address the kinds of questions that are best investigated through large-scale studies that combine multiple designs, data sources, and analysis procedures. Pendapat ini menegaskan bahwa penelitian mengenai pendidikan guru dibangun dengan penelitian kolaboratif. Penelitian ini harus dikerjakan oleh tim yang memiliki pengetahuan dan pengalaman yang beragam dalam metodologi penelitian. Tujuannya untuk mendapatkan pertanyaan penelitian terbaik yang dapat diinvestigasi dengan mengkombinasikan desain, sumber daya, dan prosedur analisis penelitian.

Ada cukup banyak hambatan dalam pelaksanaan penelitian secara kolaboratif, diantaranya perbedaan kemampuan, perbedaan cara pandang, perbedaan ketertarikan topik penelitian, perbedaan budaya atau kebiasaan penelitian, dan lain sebagainya. Hal ini yang sering menjadi penyebab gagalnya proses penelitian secara kolaboratif. Smith & Malina mengatakan the problem for researchers from one culture or context wishing to conduct research on another culture is that the outsiders’ past experiences will not have equipped them to make sense of events in the same way that insiders would. Lebih jauh, Pine (2009) identifies three specific challenges that those participating in teacher research collaboration must address. First, he argues, collaboration that involves practice must focus on inquiry and research, rather than on discussions and emotional support of the daily practice. Second, collaboration that is contrived (Hargreaves, 1994) must be avoided because it leaves some stakeholders less invested than others. Third, researchers have to be mindful that collaboration can lead to “group think,” which limits the possibilities for dissenting views or counter narratives within the collaborative group.

Penelitian kolaboratif, seperti semua kegiatan penelitian lain yang dikerjakan oleh guru, tentunya akan meningkatkan kualitas guru tersebut. Hal ini terjadi karena dengan melaksanakan penelitian, guru akan terbiasa untuk mengevaluasi dan mengembangkan metode-metode pembelajaran terbaik bagi peserta didik yang diajarnya. Collaborative teacher research can enrich teacher education (e.g. Cochran-Smith & Lytle, 1999; Levin & Rock, 2003; Loughran, Hamilton, LaBoskey, & Russell, 2004; Goswami & Stillman, 1987). Teacher research has the power to improve how prospective teachers learn information about both teaching, as well as transform how they are mentored into the profession. Pendapat ini memperkuat fakta bahwa dengan meneliti, guru akan bertransformasi menjadi pribadi yang jauh lebih berkualitas, terutama dalam pembelajaran.

Lebih jauh dikatakan collaborative teacher research has the power to disrupt hierarchy. First, collaboration can protect teachers from exploitation, since the researchers share and interpret data together (Shockley, 2001). Second, collaboration ensures that teachers’ views are represented in the literature and that knowledge production is not unidirectional (Zeni, 2001; Wells, 2001). Third, collaborative research facilitates publication for teachers, who would otherwise have much less access to research tools, journals, conferences, and research networks (Minarik, 2001). Hal ini menegaskan bahwa ada banyak manfaat yang diperoleh jika guru melaksanakan penelitian kolaboratif, mulai dari lepas dari eksploitasi peneliti di perguruan tinggi, mendapatkan referensi-referensi berkualitas, serta dapat difasilitasi dalam mempublikasikan hasil-hasil penelitian yang telah dikerjakan. Salah satu kegiatan penelitian yang bersifat kolaboratif adalah penelitian tindakan, atau saat ini lebih dikenal dengan nama penelitian tindakan kelas. Brown menuliskan bahwa the action research process is collaborative and investigative where practitioners work together to design and follow through with research on practical problems in their classrooms.
